Co-Chairs Alexandros Taflanidis, Associate Professor, Tracy Kijewski-Correa, Linbeck Associate Professor and Ahsan Kareem, Moran Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences recently hosted EMI/PMC 2012: the 2012 Joint Conference of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) – the American Society of Civil Engineers premiere annual mechanics conference -- and 11th ASCE Joint Specialty Conference on Probabilistic Mechanics and Structural Reliability – offered by ASCE every four years as a special venue for related work in probabilistic methods. The conference, which ran June 17-20, brought together over 400 scholars from around the world to exchange recent developments in mechanics and probabilistic methods across wide ranging fields drawing from the broad disciplines of civil and mechanical engineering. The conference featured six keynote speakers who participated in interactive keynote panels, which included distinguished Notre Dame faculty from AME, CEEES, and CBE. Meanwhile, 72 technical sessions hosted nearly 450 papers on wide ranging subjects including natural hazard risk assessment and mitigation, biomechanics, nanomaterials, structural health monitoring and computational mechanics.

The conference provided numerous venues for formal and informal interactions between colleagues, including a lively Icebreaker Reception in Club Naimoli with live Irish music by Kennedy’s Kitchen and the Conference Banquet at the Century Center where numerous distinguished medals and awards were presented by EMI to honorees from around the world.

More information about the conference can be obtained at the official website: http://emipmc12.nd.edu.
