Maddy Sowar received SMART scholarship

Maddy Sowar is a rising junior majoring in Civil Engineering at Notre Dame. She has been awarded the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship through the Department of Defense for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years. The SMART Scholarship is an opportunity for students pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. As part of the scholarship, Maddy has an internship with the Army Corps of Engineers at the Rock Island District for the summer of 2015. After completing her degree, she has a two year commitment to work for the Rock Island District. During the school year, she does research in Dr. Thrall's Kinetic Structures lab and for Engineering to Empower. With the support of Dr. Thrall, she will be participating in the Young Structural Engineer's International Design Competition 2014 along with senior Angelene Dascanio.
