Paradigm Shift in Tall Building Typologies: Past, Present, & Future Technologies’ Impact on the New Generation of Tall Buildings Systems

The emergence of new technologies, such as UHPC, High Strength Steel, Modular and off site construction, Structural health monitoring Programs (SHMP ), IOT, 3D printing, BIM, digital transformation in construction industry, form finding and typologies, sustainability, low CO2 footprint has had a major impact on the development of a new generation of supertall building typologies.

The focus of this presentation will provide insight on the impact of using these technologies on the future generation and typologies of supertall and mega-tall and complex buildings systems. The presentation will include case studies illustrating the benefits of these innovative technologies in reducing resources, off-site construction, sustainability benefits, reduction in CO2, while improving the overall performance and delivery of these projects, including cost and time benefits.

Design for constructability and delivery of high performance of supertalls and complex projects has been a prime concern of Ahmad Abdelrazaq. Ahmad Abdelrazaq is the Founder and Managing Director and Partner of RISE GLOBAL, LLC, a firm that is specialized in all aspects of engineering and management works for large and complex development projects. Some of the notable project that Ahmad has been engaged with include but not limited to the design and construction planning for Lakhta 2 and 3, Mukaab (KSA), Como Residences, Burj Azizi, SRG tower (UAE), NG Tower (India).

Mr. Abdelrazaq formerly served as the executive vice president with Samsung C&T, Korea, and held several key technical, management, and operational positions during his tenure at Samsung C&T, including consolidating, developing, and strengthening the high-rise building division with diversified business models both domestically and globally.

Ahmad was executive project director responsible for the delivery of the Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur and the Lakhta Center in St. Petersburg. Among many projects at Samsung, Mr. Abdelrazaq also has been involved in all aspects of construction planning, pre-construction services, structural design, and completion of the Burj Khalifa, Merdeka 118, Samsung Headquarters, Tanjong Pagar, National Science and Technology Museum, The Millennium Park Project in in Chicago, and the Jio World Centre, India. Mr. Abdelrazaq is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and received many awards including the ASCE Ernest Howard award.
