In this talk, we will explore the pivotal role that individual engineers play in the construction and maintenance of America’s infrastructure. From mass transit to bridges and highways to water systems and power grids, engineers are at the forefront of designing and implementing the systems that keep our country running smoothly. We will discuss the critical skills necessary for success in this field, including technical proficiency, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication. Additionally, we will discuss examples of ethical dilemmas you very well may face in your careers: such as balancing public safety with cost constraints, navigating conflicts of interest, and ensuring sustainable practices. By understanding these challenges and the importance of ethical decision-making, aspiring engineers can better prepare themselves for a rewarding and impactful career in infrastructure engineering.
