The department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences offers three options for research-based master of science degrees.
- Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE)
- Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (MSEnvE)
- Master of Science in Earth Sciences (MSES)
The MSCE and MSEnvE degrees are available to those students holding an undergraduate engineering degree or who have been, prior to beginning their graduate programs, accepted as qualifying to take the fundamentals of engineering (FE) exam by an engineering licensing board.
The MSES degree is available to those students holding an undergraduate degree in geological/Earth sciences, or who have or will have taken a minimum of three 60000 or above level courses in the area of geological sciences. This degree is primarily intended for those students studying geological/Earth sciences.
Degree requirements
- A minimum of 30 credits of which 16-24 credits are earned by coursework and the balance through thesis research
- A defense of a written thesis in your major area of study in front of a committee composed of your research advisor and two committee members
Students are expected to complete all Masters requirements in approximately two to three years. More information can be obtained from the Graduate Student Handbook.
Admission requirements
- Undergraduate degree in any field of engineering or physical sciences
- At least 3 letters of recommendation
- Curriculum vitae and statement of intent
- The GRE general test is optional
International students are required to submit the scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with their applications.
