Notre Dame launches new Minor in Construction Management

The College of Engineering and the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame have introduced a new Minor in Construction Management (MCM), a five-course, 15-credit program that prepares students for careers in the construction industry. The minor is open to Notre Dame students in any major who have taken the prerequisite upper-level engineering and science courses.

“This minor gives our students the skills to step confidently into the construction industry, whether as designers, managers, or contractors,” said Brian Smith, Massman Beavers Collegiate Professor in Heavy Civil Engineering and College of Engineering faculty liaison for the minor. “They’ll learn everything from estimating and scheduling to emerging technologies like BIM and CAD.”

“Construction projects demand collaboration across disciplines,” said John Mellor, professor of the practice and School of Architecture faculty liaison for the minor. “By bringing architecture and engineering together, this minor mirrors the realities of the industry and sets our students up for success.”

The minor requires five courses—three core and two electives. Core courses build a foundation in construction management, while electives let students explore specialized topics such as historic preservation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and environmental systems.
