Liang Hu has been awarded the 2021 International (IAWE) Junior Award from the International Association for Wind Engineering for his “significant and original contributions to nonstationary wind effects on structures and simulation of stochastic wind fields.”
The award is presented annually to a researcher under 40 who has a record of outstanding achievement in wind engineering research.
Hu is a Notre Dame Ph.D. candidate in civil engineering who works in the NatHaz Modeling Laboratory directed by Ahsan Kareem, the Robert M. Moran Professor of Engineering. Hu also earned a Ph.D. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, and he holds a position there as associate professor.
The NatHaz laboratory studies and quantifies the effects of natural hazards such as wind, waves and earthquakes on structures such as tall buildings, long-span bridges, offshore structures, etc. and develops strategies to mitigate and manage their effects.
Kareem points out that 6 of the 17 IAWE award recipients (since the award’s inception in 2007) have been associated with the NatHaz laboratory at some point, either as Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, or faculty.
Congratulations, Liang Hu!
